Introduction to the team:

Our Technology Team partners with teams across Expedia Group to create innovative products, services, and tools to deliver high-quality experiences for travelers, partners, and our employees. A singular technology platform powered by data and machine learning provides secure, differentiated, and personalized experiences that drive loyalty and traveler satisfaction.

The Metasearch team focuses on building and maintaining high-quality data integrations with key partners like Google, Trivago, and TripAdvisor. We empower teams in Machine Learning Science and Channel Management with timely, accurate datasets that drive automated, data-informed decision-making at scale.

In this role, you will:

  • Collaborate proactively across teams and stakeholders, building shared understanding of dependencies, coordinating diverse perspectives, and contributing to collective problem-solving.
  • Participate in and contribute to communities of practice, continuously learning new technologies and sharing knowledge to improve team and organizational effectiveness.
  • Design, develop, and operate complex, non-routine data applications, including highly available distributed systems for large-scale batch and real-time data processing.
  • Apply advanced software engineering and data design principles, including clean, maintainable, modular code; effective use of frameworks; database and schema design; performance and scalability tuning; and advanced algorithms.
  • Lead and influence code quality and evolution, including code reviews, identifying inefficiencies, and recommending improvements in systems, tools, and operational processes.
  • Think holistically across systems, identifying opportunities to improve efficiency across technology, processes, and organizational boundaries using a whole-systems perspective.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement, recommending advancements in data engineering, cloud platforms, enterprise data management, analytics, BI, and data science technologies.
  • Communicate complex technical and operational topics effectively, including compiling reports, conducting RCAs, and presenting findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.

Experience and qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience (Bachelor’s) or 3+ years (Master’s) or equivalent professional experience, with strong software development skills across multiple languages (e.g., Java, Python, Scala, Spark), including understanding their strengths, limitations, and appropriate use cases.
  • Proven experience building, operating, and maintaining production data pipelines and data products, including monitoring, troubleshooting, debugging, fixing issues within SLAs, and ensuring performance, data validation, and cost optimization.
  • Hands-on experience with large-scale data systems, including batch and real-time/streaming data ingestion, processing, storage, movement, and access patterns for internal and external consumers.
  • Strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, and distributed systems.
  • Experience designing moderately complex, highly available, and observable systems, with familiarity in data modeling, schema design patterns, and organizational reference architectures and technology standards.
  • Cloud experience within the data domain, with the ability to independently make technical decisions within project scope.
  • Strong testing, monitoring, and observability practices, including designing testable systems, testing tools and applications, and identifying and resolving operational inefficiencies.
  • Solid business acumen and domain knowledge, with the ability to understand how team goals align with business needs, identify project-level business problems, and deliver practical data-driven solutions.
  • Strong understanding of cross-team dependencies, stakeholder interaction, and how projects and teams integrate across the organization.
