Front-End Engineer III / User Experience Engineer III (React.Js)
Introduction to the Team
Expedia Technology teams partner our Product teams to create innovative products, services, and tools that deliver high-quality experiences for travelers, partners, and employees. Our unified technology platform, powered by data and machine learning, enables secure, personalized, and differentiated experiences that drive loyalty and traveler satisfaction.
The Expedia Group Cars team owns the end-to-end car rental shopping and booking. We build scalable, high-performance systems that enable travelers to plan, search, compare, and book rental cars seamlessly across web and app platforms.
Leveraging modern technologies such as React, GraphQL, Java, Kotlin, Spring, DynamoDB, Elasticsearch, and Redis, our systems operate at global scale—serving millions of travelers while ensuring reliability, performance, and continuous innovation in the Cars booking journey.
We are looking for mobile engineers who are excited to contribute to the growth and evolution of the Cars business by delivering impactful features and services that delight customers and partners. You will work in a collaborative, fast-paced environment where ownership, technical excellence, and innovation are highly valued.
Team members in Cars are accountable for delivery and outcomes in a high-impact environment. We embody the “One Team” philosophy and apply Agile, Lean, Continuous Delivery, and data-driven principles across engineering and operations.
In this role, you will:
- Design, build, and maintain rich, performant, and accessible user interfaces using React.js and modern JavaScript/TypeScript within Expedia Group’s design and engineering standards.
- Implement robust client-side application architecture, including component composition, state management, routing, and API integration patterns that are scalable and maintainable across multiple product surfaces.
- Collaborate closely with product, design, and backend engineering to translate user experience requirements into technical solutions, ensuring high usability, consistency, and reliability across domains.
- Apply solid front-end engineering practices including automated testing, code reviews, performance optimization, security-conscious coding, and observability for web applications at scale.
- Contribute to and consume shared UI component libraries, design systems, and tooling to enable reuse and consistency across teams and projects, ensuring solutions can be adapted for multiple domains.
- Demonstrate familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products, including safely integrating and operating AI/ML‑enabled solutions that improve outcomes for customers and internal users.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience.
- 5+ years of relevant professional experience.
- Professional experience developing production-grade web applications using React.js, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSS, including integration with RESTful or GraphQL APIs.
- Proven experience owning user-facing features end-to-end within a web application, including low-level UI design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational support in collaboration with cross-functional partners.
- Demonstrated skills in front-end system design, including component-level low-level design (LLD), API consumption patterns, and data modeling for view-layer state and client-side data management, within modern engineering ecosystems and tooling (such as package managers, build systems, testing frameworks, and CI/CD pipelines).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience designing and evolving complex React architectures at scale, including patterns for state management, performance tuning, and modularization across multiple products or domains.
- Background in building and extending shared UI component libraries or design systems, and driving adoption of best practices for accessibility, localization, and responsive design across teams.
- Track record of using data and experimentation (A/B tests, analytics, user behavior insights) to inform UX decisions and iteratively improve customer-facing experiences.
- Hands-on experience with AI-augmented developer or UX workflows (for example, code generation assistance, design optimization, or personalized UI experiences), with the ability to safely integrate and operate AI/ML‑enabled capabilities in web applications.
- Experience collaborating with AI/ML and backend teams to design front-end APIs, interaction patterns, and data flows that surface AI-driven personalization, recommendations, or automation in a transparent, responsible, and performant way, including role-specific application of AI/ML concepts to enhance user experience.
