Introduction to the team
Expedia Technology teams partner with our Product teams to create innovative products, services, and tools to deliver high-quality experiences for travelers, partners, and our employees. A singular technology platform powered by data and machine learning provides secure, differentiated, and personalized experiences that drive loyalty and traveler satisfaction.
The Air Shopping Platform organization owns the end‑to‑end platform that powers Flight Search, Pricing, and Shopping across all Expedia Group points of sale, partnering closely with product, analytics, and connectivity teams. We are responsible for building a reliable, highly performant, scalable, and cost‑effective platform that delivers fast and relevant flight offers to shopping experiences via Flight Search, Flight Details, and additional supporting APIs. The team is primarily accountable for driving flight transaction growth at Expedia Group across many concurrent workstreams.
In this role, you will:
· Lead and grow a high‑performing engineering team to deliver scalable, resilient, and high‑quality services that power flight search, pricing, and shopping experiences across Expedia Group.
· Manage people and the team first, not just projects – set clear expectations, define team goals, and drive accountability for delivery, quality, and operational excellence.
· Define and evolve the technical direction and architecture for your area (multiple services within the Air Shopping Platform), ensuring alignment with overall platform strategy and business goals.
· Provide hands‑on oversight of system design, API design, and data modeling for critical services, enabling secure, maintainable, and performant systems in production.
· Drive predictable delivery across multiple services/domains, partnering closely with Product, Analytics, and Connectivity teams to sequence roadmaps, manage dependencies, and remove blockers.
· Foster a healthy engineering culture centered on inclusion, psychological safety, collaboration, and continuous learning, creating an environment where engineers and managers can do their best work.
· Attract, hire, and onboard diverse engineering talent while coaching, mentoring, and developing engineers through regular feedback, career guidance, and growth opportunities.
· Champion modern engineering practices and AI‑driven tooling (e.g., CI/CD, test automation, observability, AI‑assisted development) to improve developer productivity, reliability, and speed of experimentation.
· Safely integrate and operate AI/ML‑enabled solutions that improve search relevance, ranking, and personalization outcomes, championing best practices in responsible and ethical AI deployment.
· Own engineering standards and best practices (architecture, code quality, testing, observability, reliability, performance) across your area and influence these across adjacent teams.
· Use data and metrics (e.g., SLIs/SLOs, incident trends, delivery throughput, quality, and team health indicators) to run the business of engineering and continuously improve outcomes.
· Manage budgets and headcount plans for your team in partnership with senior leadership, making thoughtful trade‑offs between scope, quality, timelines, and operational cost.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field; or equivalent related professional experience.
· Typically 8+ years of relevant professional software development experience and 3+ years of people management experience leading engineers and/or managers in a production environment.
· Strong foundation and extensive experience developing Java/Kotlin applications and services.
· Demonstrated success managing teams delivering complex, distributed systems or large‑scale web services, ideally in search, recommendations, or other high‑throughput, low‑latency domains.
· Strong foundation in large‑scale system design, APIs, data modeling, and cloud‑native architectures (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure), including owning services end‑to‑end in production.
· Proven experience running agile software development processes (Scrum, Kanban, or similar), driving operational excellence (availability, reliability, incident management), and partnering with Product to shape and deliver roadmaps.
· Experience building inclusive, engaged teams and effectively navigating difficult people situations (under‑performance, conflict, organizational change).
Preferred Qualifications:
· Experience managing teams in a global, matrixed technology organization.
· Background in ecommerce, travel, or large‑scale consumer/marketplace platforms, with exposure to mission‑critical search, pricing, or recommendation systems.
· Deep familiarity with Information Retrieval techniques and platforms (e.g., Elasticsearch/Lucene, ML embeddings‑based vector search) applied to semantic, free‑text search and recommendation problems.
· Track record of driving architectural modernization and simplification initiatives for large, distributed systems, including platform and infrastructure investments.
· Demonstrated ability to lead change and engineering productivity improvements, including adoption of automation, AI‑assisted tooling, and improved observability practices.
· Experience partnering with Security, Privacy, and Compliance to embed secure and compliant software delivery practices into engineering workflows.
· Excellent communication skills, with the ability to represent engineering in senior forums and translate complex technical concepts for non‑technical stakeholders
