Expedia Group seeks a motivated and results-oriented Senior Engineering Manager to join our Data Lake and Catalog team. As a Senior Engineering Manager on an industry-leading data platform, you will lead engineers building and operating the core of Expedia Group’s Lakehouse and Data Discoverability capabilities. This platform serves as the foundation for data engineering, analytics, experimentation, and AI/ML across Expedia Group, providing governed and scalable access to data, enabling teams to easily find, understand, and trust the data they use.
You will collaborate with other experienced software engineers and leaders to drive improvements to our technology, design and develop new services and software solutions, embed AI across the platform, and build and track metrics to ensure high-quality results. You will work closely with business partners and leaders to influence and drive product vision and lead the design of our systems.
We love contributing our work to open-source communities and have successfully done so with tools like Circus Train, a Hive dataset replication tool, and Waggle Dance, a federation service that allows access to data lake tables across multiple catalogs. Recently, we added Hive support to Apache Iceberg, a high-performance open table format for large analytic datasets that underpins many modern Lakehouse architectures.
We guarantee you’ll learn a lot and won’t be bored—this is a chance to shape the future of how Expedia Group stores, governs, and discovers data.
In this role, you will:
- Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team responsible for the design, development, and support of Expedia Group’s Data Lake and Catalog solutions.
- Drive the delivery of scalable, reliable, secure, governed, and cost-efficient technical solutions, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and business requirements.
- Promote an SLO-driven culture, defining and tracking metrics to ensure high-quality results.
- Oversee end-to-end system and API architecture, enabling efficient storage and cataloguing across multiple domains.
- Champion the adoption and safe integration of AI/ML-enabled solutions to optimize data discovery, governance, and accessibility.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, architecture, and operations teams to deliver high-impact, data-driven outcomes.
- Foster a culture of engineering excellence, continuous improvement, and technical innovation within your team and organization.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree or Equivalent Level; Technical Degree Preferred
- 8+ years of relevant professional experience and 3+ years of people management experience
- Proven ownership of multi-service, domain-level architecture and delivery for data infrastructure solutions
- Deep expertise in system design, API development, and data modelling within cloud-based environments
- Familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience leading architecture and platform evolution for data lake and catalog solutions at enterprise scale
- Demonstrated success in operationalizing AI/ML-enabled features to enhance data quality, governance, or automation
- Track record of driving engineering best practices, including secure data handling and operational excellence
- Strong analytical and data-driven decision-making skills, with a focus on optimizing end-to-end data workflows
- Advanced knowledge of integrating and operating AI/ML-powered data discovery and cataloging tools in production environments
