Introduction to the Team
The Air Filters & Ranking team at Expedia Group sits at the heart of how travelers discover and select flights. We are a backend‑focused, data‑driven team that builds the intelligence behind flight search results—ensuring that millions of customers around the world can find the right itinerary quickly, confidently, and at scale.
What We Build
Our team owns and evolves the Flights Central Tool, as well as the filters and ranking systems that shape what travelers see on the flight search results page.
• Flights Central Tool
We provide a central control plane for flight experiences: configuration, feature flags, experiments, and insights that let product, analytics, and operations teams fine‑tune how flight offers are selected and presented. This tool is the hub where business strategy meets technical execution for air.
• Ranking & Offer Selection
We integrate ML models at multiple layers of the stack to score, blend, and rank flight offers in real time. Our goal is to surface the most relevant options—balancing price, convenience, reliability, flexibility, and traveler preferences—so that customers see compelling choices at the very top of the results.
• Filters & Intent Understanding
We design and power flight filters (e.g., stops, times, airlines, fare attributes, flexibility) so that travelers can narrow hundreds of itineraries down to a small, manageable set. We are increasingly intent‑aware, using behavior and context to order and apply filters in ways that speed up decision‑making.
Our Mission & Impact
Our mission is simple but ambitious: help travelers find the flights they actually want as fast as possible.
• When a traveler lands on the flight results page, our systems work behind the scenes to:
Rank offers so the best options appear first.
Highlight the right trade‑offs (price vs. time vs. flexibility).
Present filters and controls that feel natural and powerful, not overwhelming.
• By combining robust backend engineering with machine learning and experimentation, we:
Reduce the time it takes to find a suitable itinerary.
Increase customer confidence and satisfaction.
Drive meaningful business outcomes in conversion, attachment, and loyalty.
In this role, you will:
Design, implement, and maintain robust, scalable, and secure services and applications, including system design (low-level design), API design, and data modeling, aligned with business and customer needs.
Own end-to-end delivery of complex features and services, from technical design and implementation through deployment, monitoring, and ongoing improvements across multiple domains or services.
Write high-quality, testable, and maintainable code, applying engineering best practices for code reviews, automated testing, observability, reliability, and operational excellence.
Collaborate with product, design, and cross-functional engineering teams to break down ambiguous problems, define technical direction, and deliver incremental, measurable outcomes.
Safely integrate and operate AI/ML‑enabled solutions that improve outcomes, including familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products.
Contribute to improving engineering standards, tooling, and practices across teams while mentoring others in debugging, performance optimization, and effective use of shared platforms and services.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Several years of professional software development experience building and operating production services or applications, with ownership of at least one significant service or multi-service area.
Proficiency in at least one modern programming language and associated ecosystem, with strong understanding of data structures, algorithms, object-oriented or functional design, and relational or NoSQL data modeling.
Demonstrated experience designing and implementing APIs, low-level system designs, and integration patterns, including monitoring, logging, and incident response for owned services.
Familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and the ability to safely integrate and operate AI/ML‑enabled solutions that improve product or platform outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience designing and evolving the architecture of complex, distributed systems or services, including scalable API design, data modeling for high-volume workloads, and robust integration with internal and external systems.
Proven track record driving technical delivery for cross-team initiatives, including decomposing large problems, aligning stakeholders, and using data and experimentation to inform decisions and optimizations.
Strong focus on reliability and operational excellence, including hands-on experience with observability, capacity planning, performance tuning, resilience patterns, and continuous improvement of runbooks and automation.
Experience safely integrating AI/ML‑enabled capabilities into production systems (such as personalization, recommendations, or decision support), including understanding of failure modes, guardrails, and responsible usage patterns.
Familiarity with AI-driven developer productivity tools and workflows, and the ability to leverage them to improve code quality, velocity, and maintainability while upholding security and compliance standards.
