Software Development Engineer III:

Our Technology Team partners with teams across Expedia Group to create innovative products, services, and tools to deliver high-quality experiences for travelers, partners, and our employees. A singular technology platform powered by data and machine learning provides secure, differentiated, and personalized experiences that drive loyalty and traveler satisfaction.

The Lodging Connectivity Team plays a key role in growing the marketplace by onboarding lodging partners—including providers and hotel chains—and enabling them to use our APIs to upload property details and configure rooms, rates, and policies. As a Software Development Engineer III on this team, you’ll be a high-impact individual contributor who mentors junior engineers, leads complex and well-scoped projects, and applies modern engineering practices to enhance and scale our systems. Your work directly supports seamless partner onboarding across Expedia’s lodging platforms (including Vrbo and Expedia Hotels), helping ensure a trusted and delightful experience for travelers.

In this role, you will:

  • Design, develop, and maintain software solutions enabling smooth partner onboarding and management across multiple lodging platforms.

  • Solve complex business and technical problems using agile methodologies, producing scalable, flexible, efficient, and supportable solutions.

  • Research and recommend frameworks, libraries, and architectural patterns that improve reliability and developer productivity.

  • Develop APIs and backend systems that serve millions of requests daily, ensuring performance, observability, and resilience.

  • Creatively test and maintain software applications using appropriate development tools and frameworks.

  • Lead and participate in code reviews, promoting code quality, consistency, and operational excellence.

  • Identify areas of inefficiency in systems or code, offering and implementing improvements.

  • Collaborate across teams to understand dependencies and align on shared solutions and business outcomes.

  • Mentor junior developers, sharing technical and domain knowledge to increase team effectiveness.

  • Advocate for best practices in testing, monitoring, SLAs, and system design for resiliency and scalability.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical field; or equivalent related professional experience

  • 5+ years (Bachelor’s) or 3+ years (Master’s) of professional software development experience.

  • Experience maintaining and supporting multiple production systems (monitoring, debugging, and troubleshooting).

  • Strong expertise in Java, Kotlin, and related frameworks

  • Experience with GraphQL, and relational/non-relational databases.

  • Solid understanding of software design principles, algorithms, and data structures.

  • Experience developing APIs consumed across business units and contributes to large-scale, distributed systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with React

  • Experience communicating complex technical concepts clearly to varied audiences.

  • Understanding of trade-offs between languages, frameworks, and system architectures to make informed technical decisions.

  • Demonstrated holistic approach to problem-solving — integrating structure, people, process, and technology.

Please note that this role is only available in Seattle, in alignment with our flexible work model which requires employees to be in-office at least three days a week. Relocation assistance will be considered for candidates relocating to these locations for this role.

The total cash range for this position in Seattle is $137,500.00 to $192,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $220,000.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
