Introduction to the Team:
Join Expedia Group’s newly formed Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Machine Learning Science team in San Jose, where your work will directly influence how millions of travelers engage with our platform. As a Machine Learning Scientist II, you’ll design intelligent systems that personalize outbound communications, drive loyalty, and shape the future of travel through AI.
In this role, you will:
Research, design, and implement state-of-the-art recommendation algorithms for Customer Relationship Management (CRM) use cases, including personalized offers, retention strategies, and next-best-action recommendations.
Build scalable machine learning models that adapt to sparse, noisy, and dynamic customer interaction data.
Collaborate with data engineers to develop robust pipelines for feature generation, model training, and real-time inference.
Conduct rigorous offline and online experiments, including A/B testing and counterfactual evaluation, to validate model performance.
Translate business goals into measurable machine learning objectives, aligning technical solutions with customer engagement outcomes.
Stay current with the latest advancements in recommendation research, deep learning architectures, and large-scale personalization systems.
Minimum Qualifications:
MS, or BS in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience
1+ years of experience building production-grade recommendation or personalization systems
Proficient knowledge of collaborative filtering and deep learning for recommendations
Demonstrated skill in Python and at least one machine learning framework such as TensorFlow or PyTorch
Experience handling large-scale, real-world data
Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to various stakeholders
Preferred Qualifications:
PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, Engineering, or a related field
3+ years of experience in building and deploying large-scale machine learning systems
Advanced knowledge of reinforcement learning and causal inference methods
Experience with distributed systems like Apache Spark
Proven track record of implementing and optimizing recommendation systems that drive business impact
Experience mentoring junior team members and contributing to the data science community
Familiarity with travel industry challenges and opportunities in personalization
Experience productionizing ML models in collaboration with Machine Learning Engineers.
Prior work in CRM, marketing tech, or outbound personalization systems.
Contributions to open-source ML libraries or published research in recommendation systems.

The total cash range for this position in San Jose is $122,500.00 to $171,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $196,000.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
