Introduction to team
As the Senior Director, Data Platform Engineering, you will be responsible for setting the vision and technical direction for Expedia Group's foundational Data Platform serving critical needs across data processing, metrics, and data quality. You will lead a globally distributed team of over 100 engineers, managers, technical program managers, and architects, responsible for designing, building, and operating platform services that empower product teams to deliver best-in-class experiences and drive business success through actionable, reliable data.
In this role, you will:
- Define and execute the Data Platform vision, strategy, and technical roadmap for data processing, real-time/batch analytics infrastructure, metrics frameworks, and enterprise-wide data quality solutions
- Inspire and lead a diverse global team 100+ FTEs, building strong engineering culture and organizational capability across time zones, empowering teams to embrace ownership, accountability, and technical rigor
- Oversee delivery of core data processing engines, metrics platform, and robust data quality frameworks, ensuring world-class reliability, scalability, and efficiency
- Partner with executive leadership, product, analytics, privacy, and security teams to anticipate business needs and drive enterprise-wide adoption of platform services
- Build and nurture strong relationships with key stakeholders to ensure that platform strategy aligns with business and technology priorities and develop and advocate for resource and investment plans to support the platform’s growth, modernization, and compliance needs
- Create and maintain technical and organizational succession plans, mentoring leaders and technical talent within the organization
Experience and Qualifications:
- 16+ years of engineering experience, including 7+ years leading data/platform engineering teams at large-scale, global organizations.
- Proven track record of building and operating mission-critical data infrastructure in a cloud environment (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure), including foundational services for data ingestion, ETL/ELT, batch and streaming frameworks, metrics platforms, and enterprise data quality.
- Deep technical acumen across distributed systems, data architecture, cloud-native computing, observability, and security/privacy for data-at-rest/in-motion
- Creative, visionary thinker who eagerly anticipates future trends in big data, real-time analytics, AI/ML enablement, and governance
- Experience delivering outcomes in highly cross-functional, matrixed organizations; comfortable influencing leaders at all levels and across business units
Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
