Senior Data Engineer, Media Solutions

Introduction to the team
Expedia Group Media Solutions is dedicated to build creative media partnerships for travel advertisers enabling them to use Expedia's network of leading travel brands and global sites. We have revolutionized the way brands reach and connect with online travel consumers, emerging as a leader in online advertising among travel and e-commerce brands. With a growing product portfolio offering a multitude of advertising and sponsorship opportunities, our Media Solutions team at Expedia has created an expansive marketing platform for advertising partners to reach the 144+ million worldwide monthly unique visitors that visit Expedia Group sites.


The Data Platform group at Media Solutions is building the data foundations that will fuel the power of data and provide insights for all our traveler and advertiser uses cases. We build and operate systems that centralize all of Expedia Group’s advertising data, making it easy for our systems and users, transform and access data for analytics, data science, finance and advertiser experiences. As a technical lead data engineer on the team, you will build systems across foundational processing and data storage systems through scalable pipelines, to frameworks and tools that make data available to teams and systems. We find creative ways to implement learning from ideas like Agile, Lean, Continuous Delivery and the Scientific Method in many aspects of software design, development, delivery and operations. In this role, you will:

  • Lead, design and develop scalable distributed data pipelines using cluster-compute frameworks

  • Develop scalable system designs that solve business problems

  • Apply best practices, algorithms, data engineering patterns and data structures to produce maintainable code

  • Demonstrate structured approach to development (schema, design, develop, test, instrument, deploy and monitor) of systems

  • Act as a lead on data engineering best practices, design, code, operational reviews and be a team-player

  • Mentor software and data engineers on the team

Experience and qualifications:

  • Bachelors or Master’s or equivalent professional technical work experience

  • 8+ years of work experience in Big Data / distributed compute projects in production

  • Proficient in one or more programming languages such as Scala, Python or Java

  • Experience with Hadoop ecosystem (Spark, Hive, Hadoop, Presto)

  • Experience with SQL and Data Modeling

  • Experience with infrastructure as code such as Terraform, CloudFormation

  • Experience with workflow management engines such as Airflow, AWS Step Functions or equivalent

  • Experience with cloud or on-premises Big Data/MPP analytics platform

  • Experience with AWS technologies like S3, EC2, EMR or equivalent

  • Experienced working in a lean and agile environment

  • Developed and maintained data pipelines in a production environment

  • Experience with advertising is a plus but not required

The total cash range for this position in Seattle is $173,000.00 to $242,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $277,000.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
