Director, Data Platform Engineering

The Data and AI group is looking for a top-tier data professional to join us as Director of Data Engineering to lead the development of EG’s data processing platform capabilities. As a senior engineering leader, you will define short and long-term roadmaps that align with our data strategy and lead technical implementation of data processing services. You will have responsibility for managing multiple engineering teams, platform operations, and working with our internal partners to influence change and collaboratively working towards shared technology and business outcomes.

What will you do

  • Lead engineering teams in modernization of data processing capabilities across Expedia Group

  • Improve developer productivity through implementation of workflow automation, self-service, and streamlined data platform experiences

  • Define, measure, and be accountable for platform operational resilience and software quality assurance (e.g. unit testing, SLO’s, security, incident response, etc.)

  • Define objectives, milestone and metrics to provide clarity for engineering teams and stakeholders

  • Keep the organization informed by preparing materials and communication about initiative progress, capabilities, and roadmaps

  • Collaborate with product managers, architects, and program partners to scope, prioritize, and solution data platform services to achieve measurable business outcomes

  • Identify and resolve issues and conflicts that impair the team’s ability to meet short-term and long-term goals

  • Engage team members with learning & development activities

  • Implementing best practices for hiring and retaining top talent

Who you are

  • Leader with experience building and operating data platforms in a large enterprise environment, with specialization working on distributed data processing systems

  • Experienced people manager who has organized and developed other managers and high-performing teams

  • A thought leader who can craft a compelling technology vision and influence action with partner teams

  • Possess extensive coding and development experience with widely used programming languages in software and data engineering, such as Java and Scala

  • Experience with tools and frameworks of a modern data architecture including compute, workflow orchestration, query engines, data catalogs, table formats, and storage

  • Proven expertise in implementing, operating, and optimizing large-scale data applications using Spark and Airflow. Knowledge of Kafka and Flink are a plus

  • Experienced operations leader, comfortable with maintaining service reliability for critical platforms, defining SLA/SLO’s, managing operational service KPI’s

  • Effective verbal and written communicator with the ability to think strategically about technology decisions and manage relationships with stakeholders and senior leadership

  • BS or MS in computer science, mathematics, engineering, or related field

The total cash range for this position in Austin is $221,000.00 to $309,500.00. Employees in this role have the potential to increase their pay up to $353,500.00, which is the top of the range, based on ongoing, demonstrated, and sustained performance in the role.

Starting pay for this role will vary based on multiple factors, including location, available budget, and an individual’s knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay ranges may be modified in the future.
